Before You Begin
You will need:
- Your institutional email address and current password
- A smartphone (iOS or Android) or a phone number that can receive SMS
Option 1 - Microsoft Authenticator App (Recommended)
- Download Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- On your computer, go to identity.example.edu/mfa
- Sign in with your institutional credentials
- Click Add sign-in method and select Authenticator app
- In the Authenticator app on your phone, tap + > Work or school account > Scan QR code
- Point your phone camera at the QR code shown on screen
- Approve the test notification - enrollment is complete.
Option 2 - SMS Text Message
- At identity.example.edu/mfa, click Add sign-in method > Phone
- Enter your mobile number and select Text me a code
- Enter the 6-digit code you receive and click Verify
Note: SMS is less secure than the Authenticator app and is not recommended for admin accounts.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Did not receive SMS | Check the number is correct; wait 60 seconds and retry |
| Authenticator app not pairing | Ensure phone clock is synchronized (auto time zone) |
| Lost access to phone | Contact IT Service Desk with photo ID to reset MFA |
